The Sci Fi Dine In Theatre: Dinner under the Stars
Continuing with our Disney Restaurant Trend; Today we look at the most interesting and unique restaurant I have ever had the pleasure of eating at. Located in the unassuming corner of Disney's Hollywood Studious, is the Sci Fi Dine In Theatre.
As we entered into what resembled the back lot of a movie theatre I was completely unaware of the absolute amazingness that await us. Like, many of the restaurants in Disney we could inform the place of my food allergies before we even stepped foot in the park. When they called for our table they exclaimed "Kirkey family, allergy" I was stunned at first, a little violated but then I realized that they are really on the ball. Knowing that they already knew made me feel at ease already. As the host sat us, she asked me to reiterate my allergies and their severity. As we were seated our server was right behind the host, and said he heard everything about my allergies. He took our drink order and said he would send over a chef immediately.
Inside the restaurant was awe inspiring, built to resemble an old drive-in theatre the tables were designed to resemble small convertible cars they even had little (fake) speakers hooked up to where a window should be. The entire place was lit up like dusk, so fake street lights and signs lit the way. Behind the rows of cars was the "snack bar" and in front was a glorious silver screen reaching the top of the ceiling. Displayed on the giant screen were clips of old sci-fi black and white movies. With concession stand cartoons and interviews with Walt Disney in between. it was so encompassing I almost forgot we were there to eat.
Captivated completely by the emersion of the Sc Fi Dinner I was startled when the chef and manger came over asking us if we were the gluten and egg allergy. When we said no our table had the nut and peanut allergy. After checking his notes he said "ah yes, we have three of those tonight. " He assured me that we had nothing to worry about. There were no nuts or peanuts anywhere in the menu, even in the dessert. He assured me he sees over all of the allergy orders and would bring it out himself. After we placed our orders we all become enthralled with the short sci fi clips. The atmosphere was the most interesting and amazing I have ever been in. Drinks were served in giant glasses and when our food came it was served dinner style in baskets. The food was fantastic, but the atmosphere was what made the entire evening absolutely amazing.
Overall the food was good, the restaurant was clean and very presentable. Their food was delicious and the chef kept his word, he delivered my food, and made sure I was alright. Usually I am very skeptical of eating dessert at restaurants, but since I was reassured by both the manager and chef, I felt extremely safe ordering dessert, a chocolate shake and it was amazing.
When a restaurant such as this deals with so many food allergies on a daily basis they have the practise down to a science. They've perfected how help people with food allergies and make them feel at ease. Not only did I feel safe, but confident in their ability to help me.
I felt completely at ease in this restaurant, the entire staff seemed very informed on the food allergies in the restaurant. Our server was so helpful and informative about the menu, and the chef so willing to help us with substitutes, any worries we had, and absolutely any concern we had. For ambience I would give this place a 11/10 it was the most amazing restaurant I have ever bee too. For food and safety I'd give the place a 10/10, everyone in that place seemed to know how to approach food allergies. The protocols set in place were above standard, I would recommend this place to families, but it's a perfect place for an intimate date with that special someone. Nothing says romance like sitting in the back seat of a car, under the stars watching sci-fi movies.
